Keywords and keyword abilities

3 min read Source: CR §12 Updated 1 August 2026

A keyword is shorthand for an ability that does a specific, repeated thing. Every keyword currently in the game is listed here with the ability it stands for.

Quick#

Playable during the quick step. An activated ability that begins with this keyword may itself be played during the quick step; an event card that begins with it may be played during the quick step. May appear as an icon.

On Deploy#

An automatic ability that triggers when the card is deployed. "【On Deploy】(effect)" means "when this card is deployed, (effect)". May appear as an icon.

On Attack#

An automatic ability that triggers when the card attacks. "【On Attack】(effect)" means "when this card attacks, (effect)". May appear as an icon.

On Assign#

An automatic ability that triggers when the card is assigned to a structure. "【On Assign】(effect)" means "when this card is assigned, (effect)". May appear as an icon.

Brave (number)#

An automatic ability that triggers on attacking and pumps the attacker. "Brave N" means "【On Attack】, this card's power increases by N until end of turn".

Serious (number)#

An automatic ability that triggers on being assigned and pumps a Pal. "Serious N" means "【On Assign】 choose 1 Pal; its power increases by N until end of turn".

Interrupt#

A quick activated ability that cancels an attack. Interrupt means "【Quick】 [①, discard this card] OR [discard this card and 1 other card from hand] — nullify the opponent's attack".

Vigilance#

An automatic ability that triggers at end of turn and stands the card. Vigilance means "at the end of your turn, stand this card". A Vigilance Pal can attack and still be standing — and therefore untargetable — on your opponent's turn.

Taunt#

A continuous ability that forces the card to be attacked. Taunt means "the opponent must target this card if it can be targeted for an attack". Where several Taunt cards are legal targets, the attacker must choose one of them, and it makes no difference how many instances of Taunt any one card has. A Taunt card that cannot legally be chosen does not lock out the attack — a different legal target may be chosen instead.

Stealth#

A continuous ability that restricts blocking. Stealth means "this card cannot be blocked".

Retaliate#

An automatic ability that triggers when the Pal dies in battle and takes its opponent with it. Retaliate means "when this card is put into the graveyard, if this was a Pal that battled, put the opposing combat Pal into the graveyard".

Nocturnal#

A continuous ability tied to the Night state. Nocturnal means "if it is night, this card's power increases by 300".

Breakthrough#

An automatic ability that converts an overkill in battle into damage on the player. Breakthrough means "if the opposing combat Pal is put into the graveyard when this card is attacking, deal damage to the master of the opposing combat Pal equal to this card's strike".

Assault#

A continuous ability that removes the usual targeting restriction. Assault means "this card can choose a Pal in the stand state as an attack target" — the one exception to the rule that standing Pals cannot be attacked.
