Miscellaneous rules

Two edge cases the rules handle explicitly.

Infinite loops#

Some board states let a sequence of actions repeat forever, or force a player to repeat one forever. The rules call the repeating sequence a loop action and resolve it like this:

  • If neither player can stop the loop, the game is a draw.

  • If either player can stop it, the players who can stop it each choose how many times the loop will be performed, starting with the turn player. The loop is then performed the lowest number chosen.

  • If the game is in exactly the same state after performing the loop that many times, the loop may not be performed again.

The practical upshot: a genuinely unbreakable loop draws the game rather than hanging it, and a breakable one is resolved by the player with the least appetite for it.

Managing souls without soul cards#

Players may be allowed to track souls as numbers instead of physical cards.

  • In casual play this is by mutual agreement. At an event it is up to that event's regulations.

  • A player doing this must track two values: the total number of soul cards that would be in the soul area, and how many of those would be standing.

  • Any process that would apply to cards in the soul area applies as though those cards existed, and the player then continues tracking the updated numbers.

Note that this is the only sanctioned shortcut of its kind. Everything else — the deck, the base, the graveyard — is played with the physical cards.
